Meeting August 13

Notes from Hibbie 

 

The program was presented by Lisa Holewa, co-author of the book, What Kindergarten Teachers Know. She discussed the premise of the book, which was presenting the techniques of successful kindergarten teachers in teaching, controlling and nurturing young children in a school environment and how those techniques can be applied by parents, grandparents and caregivers. Holewa and her co-author, award-winning kindergarten teacher Joan Rice, interviewed teachers across the country to document their book. Meeting attendees showed much interest in the presentation with an active question and answer period.

 

 President Ken announced that the board had approved the proposal for membership for Patti Blaschka and that the member review period would start soon.It was great to see Gordy Bohmann who joined us again after a long absence following major surgery.  We're glad his recuperation is going well enough for Rotary to be in his schedule.  

 

Wendie Rehorst’s guest Judy Shortridge, proprietor of Living Dimensions Real Estate, attended our meeting for the first time. Hibbie’s wife, Jerrianne, also attended as a guest.

 

 Rob Bassett gave a quick run-down on the Auction. Seventy-four members and guests so far have said they will attend the auction and dinner, scheduled for Friday, October 24. Rob said he has only a few auction items in hand. There was an effort to get a message to Hibbie to stop talking about the 40 items he says are stored in his basement and turn them in. Will the message get through? Stay tuned.

Meeting August 6

Notes from Hibbie 

 

 

Thanks to Ken Tyborski and Heritage Funeral Homes, RCMF had an interesting meeting at the Heritage location in Oak Creek, one of seven locations in the area south of Milwaukee. According to reports, those attending were treated to an excellent lunch and a tour of the facility. Attendees were also provided a briefing on the trends in the funeral services industry and a very useful talk about the importance of preplanning for funerals and issues to be concerned about. For those who missed this meeting, including me, there's probably some important information we should catch up on.

 

Next week's meeting features authors Lisa Holewa and Joan Rice who will be discussing their book, What Kindergarten Teachers Know.

 

 

Meeting July 30

Notes from Hibbie 

 

 

We were privileged to have Mike Wittman and three team members visit us, talk about the robotics program and demonstrate the robot they built this year. The team won honors in competitions in Milwuakee and Atlanta. The More Robotics process is fostering interest in engineering by the participating students. Students as young as nine years old can be involved in Lego Leagues at various levels pointed toward developing skills and interest in basic engineering concepts leading eventually to the robotics program at the high school level. Pesident Ken presented a check to Mike to support this excellent program.

 

The Wednesday August 6 noon meeting will be held at the Heritage Funeral Home , 9200 S.27th Street in Oak Creek( approx. 1/4 mile north of Ryan Rd.). Ken Tyborski ,who will give the program, has graciously invited us for lunch and an on-site visit as he gives an update on the Funeral Services business. This an easy location to get to and is only five minutes from the airport. Meeting July 16

Notes from Hibbie 

 

The meeting was a Club Assembly. President Ken passed out information on available water projects for the club to ultimately select to spend $6,500 on. The members discusssed the possiblility of merging with the Whitnall Club because of declining membership, etc. After considerable input from those present the consensus was to put aside any consideration for merging for the forseeable future. The main event for the assembly was the induction of Jenessa Magolan and Wendie Rehorst. President Ken conducted the ceremony and presented them with membership certificates, Rotary pins and name badges. All present heartily welcomed both new members.

Meeting July 9 

Notes from Hibbie

 

Bethany Criss, Interim Executive Director of America's Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee brought us a stimulating program on racism. Using an interactive approach Bethany was able to involve mmany of us in the discussion process. Significant ideas and concepts were shared. This brief program will hopefully create a renewed awareness that racism is still a problem for America and the world. For those interested, a visit to America's Black Holocaust Museum (ABHM) at 4th St and North Ave in Milwaukee will provide in depth information the history of racism and social injustice. Specicific information about ABHM can be found at www.blackholocaustmuseum.org.

Next week will be a Club Assembly at which time Wendie Rehorst and Jenessa Magolan will be inducted into Club Membership. Additionally important issues about the future of the Club will be discussed, such as whether our Club should consider merging with the Whitnall Club. 

 

 

Meeting July 2 

Notes from Hibbie

 

The July 4 week's program featured Iraq veteran Sgt. Rick Martinez and his presentation, "The Journey of a Lifetime." Sgt Martinez gave an impressively narrated pictoral and video presentation of his tour of duty in Iraq during 2004. Also included was a table display of pictures and memorablia that added personal context to his Iraq experiences.  The theme of the presentation, A Journey of a Lifetime, is also the title of a book that captured the daily travails of a family apart through the compilation of emails and letters between Sgt Martinez and his mother, Sandra Brown, who also facilitated contact with his young daughter. Sandra was also involved in the presentation, enhancing the family perspective. The book is available at the Cudahy Library or through Sandra Brown (SandBro4@aol.com) at $15 per copy.

 

We welcomed Rotarian Jack Bennett from the Whitnall Club. Visitors included Patti Blaschka, guest of Rodger Nelson; Diane Garnier, guest of Bob Garnier; and Jerrianne, Chris and Dawn Hayslett, guests of Hibbie Hayslett.

 

President Ken announced the July Board Meeting will be next Wednesday, July 9 at 11 am.

 

Next week's program will be by Bethany Criss of America's Black Holocaust Museum about a new exhibit on Racism.

 

 

Meeting June 25 

Notes from Hibbie

 

The program was Installation of Officers for the Club year 2008-2009.  Prior to the Installation, John Clark gave a report on his Random Act of Kindness. Hibbie thanked Club members for their support during the past year. Secretary Bob Garnier and Treasurer Jim Briselden were recognzed for extra work required by their offices. Rodger Nelson was the Installing Official and administered the oath of office to incoming President Ken Tregellas and his fellow incoming office.

 

Ken, in a short speech, indicated he wanted to continue the club programs, work to  improve them and begin the task of finding a new location for club meetings when the airport construction starts in November. Ken said he would like to find circumstances where individuals and families served by our programs can be assisted in a way that will help them be self-sustaining instead of continuing in perpetual need. Several members of the Salvation Army Centennial Corps where Ken works attended the meeting to show support for Ken as he was installed as president.  As the meeting ended everyone joined in wishing Ken well.

Meeting June 18 

Notes from Hibbie

 

This meeting was an Award Celebration. Twelve Community organizations were awarded grants totaling $5000. Nine of the twelve were present to personally receive their checks and give us an update on their services.

 

Also the members at the meeting voted to ratify a Board decision to redirect $5000,  previously designated for a Centennial Project at the airport but not used,  to the Salvation Army for the purchase of chairs for their new auditorium.

 

Our best to Gordy Bohmann who recovering from heart surgery.

 

Next week's program is the installation of officers for 2008-09.

 

 

50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner June 10 

Notes from Hibbie

 

Kudos to Larry Haskin and his committee for organizing the wonderful celebration for our Club's 50th Anniversary. More than seventy current and former members and their guests attended and joined in the festivities. The location was perfect and the weather cooperated beautifully. We had a great view from the South Shore Yacht Club upper-level dining room of Lake Michigan's shimmering waters punctuated by white sails. An array of Rotary Club flags from clubs across the country and around the world hung like pennants around the walls, and fresh flowers decorated the snowy linen-covered tables. The Garlic Mustard Pickers provided their usual lively, toe-tapping Irish folk music during the pre-dinner mixer. After an excellent dinner, Larry Haskin introduced District Governor and Mrs. Ted Gurzynski, a past-president of RCMF, and District Governor-Elect Tamie Koop. Larry read a congratulatory letter from Dar Read, who served as our Club's first president. Dar, now 90 years old, lives in Florida. DG. Ted spoke and shared some of his Rotary experiences. Rodger Nelson gave a talk about RCMF history and what the Club has meant to him. Hibbie Hayslett and Ken Tregellas gave inspiring comments about the current Club and the Club of the future, respectively. DG-Elect Tamie presented a certificate from Rotary International to honor RCMF's 50 years of chartered service. It was great fun for all to mix with guests and former members all happy to be celebrating RCMF's golden anniversary.

 

Don't forget the Board Meeeting on June 18 followed by the grant Awards to the Community Celebration at the noon meeting.

 

 

Meeting June 4 

Notes from Hibbie

 

The meeting featured Wisconsin Law Journal Managing Editor Tony Anderson as speaker. Anderson, who is also president of the Milwaukee chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists spoke on the topic of The Consequences of Unethical Behavior. Using a variety of examples he contrasted the unethical behavior of individuals, the impact on victims of the behavior and impact on the public. The lively question-and-answer period showed the interest in this informative presentation.

 

Hibbie reminded those gathered of the Rotary International Conference in Los angels, June 15-18.

 

 Larry Haskin reported that the 50th Anniversary Celebration on June 10 was on track with more than sixty reservations made.

 

Best wishes to Ken Tyborski, who had knee surgery, and to Barbara Nelson, who broke her elbow, as they recuperate.

 

Meeting May 28 

Notes from Hibbie

 

This meeting was a Club Assembly. Fourteen members were in attendance.Larry Haskin gave an update on the 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner. Approximately 60 people have signed up to attend. Larry has developed a program that will combine club history, fellowship and fun.

 

The main issued discussed at the meeting was the Club moving from our long-time home at Mitchell Field. The latest information is that theClub will have to move to a new location sometime after November 1,depending on the airport construction schedule for the Milwaukee Roomarea at that time.There was extensive discussion about what should be considered relative to the move. TheClarion Hotel has presented a proposalfor a temporary accommodation for the Club that could be worked intoa long-term location. There are several other potential locations near the airport that could beconsidered. There also may be some space at the airport but it doesn’tlook promising. Hibbie indicated that whatever direction we take the Club must have procedures that assure that the Club’s needs are met with the membership informed and involved.

 

A volunteer committee of Ken Tregellas, Hibbie Hayslett, Bill Erby, Marty Kleven and Larry Haskin will gather information, develop options and report back to the Club.

 

Another consideration brought up was the Mitchell Field Club merging with the Whitnall Club since a move was in the offing any way. The opinion was expressed that both clubs are experiencing declining membership and that the idea of joining forces had merit. Jack Bennett of the Whitnall Club was a visitor this week. Jack will talk to the Whitnall Club president with possible informal contact with us  in the near  future. The committee identified above will explore this option if it develops.

 

 An uresolved issue is an appropriate means to honor the memories of Dick Hay and Emmett Jones.

Meeting May 21 

Notes from Hibbie

 

Called Student Recognition Day, not surprisingly, this meeting was dedicated to recognition of the top students academically at Cudahy HS, Franklin HS, Oak Creek HS, South Milwaukee HS, St. Francis HS, and St. Thomas More HS, as well as a student from each school who recieved a $1500 scholarship from the Club. Each student was called up by name, their achievement was recognized, presented a certificate, a picture taken and they told us their college destination and academic major. Most of the students were headed for UW Madison, other choices were Marquette, UWM, MATC, U of Chicago, U of Indiana, UW La Crosse, Alverno College, and St. Mary's (Minn.). There was a great turnout, every student invited came.  Twenty nine students participated, accompanied by school leaders, principals, guidance counselors, and one parent all representing the various schools.

 

Jim McIlvaine, a former Marquette basketball star and former NBA player, currently color announcer for Marquette Basketball, was the featured speaker. He encourage the students to stick with school because a degree will help create job opportunities and quality of life potential that will more difficult without it. He also encouraged students to look for a profession or job they enjoy. He noted that many of the courses of study announced could result in contributions back to the community. Jim's common sense comments were well received by the students.

 

Many thanks to Tom Schoenecker, Larry Haskin, and Randy Groleau whose work made this program a resounding success. Thanks also go to all the members who have worked and supported club fund raising. The fact that we were able to raise the scholarship award amount from $1000 to $1500 this year is significant. Helping to educate the youth of our community is a truly great investment of club resources.

Meeting May 14 

Notes from Hibbie

 

Hibbie reminded members of the upcoming District Conference , Friday-Sunday in Lake Geneva and of the Club's 50th Anniversary Celebration at 6pm June 10 at the South Shore Yacht Club.

 

For the weekly program, Bob Gutierrez, Project Director and Brian Swenson, Project Manager, representing the Dept. of Transportation, gave the Club an update on planed improvements to the I 94 North-South Corridor and the Mitchell Interchange. Work will start next year on reworkimg the Mitchell and College Ave Interchanges. There will be important changes at the Mitchell Interchange and Plainfield curve to improve safety and traffic flow. I 94 was designed and built to 50's and 60's standards that aren't compatible with modern traffic. And the roadway substructure is beginning to fail after @ 50 years use so rebuild is to meet traffic safety and road wear needs. A new interchange will be built at Drexel Ave. We can count on dealing with I 94 road building from the Mitchell to the Illinois State Line beginning in 2009 and continuing through 2017.

 

Next week's program will be Student Recognition in which top students will be introduced and scholarships will be presented. Jim McIlvaine, a former Marquette basketball star and former NBA player, will be the featured speaker.  Thanks in advance to Tom Schoenecker for putting this evevt together.  Don't miss this program.

 

 

 

Meeting May 7

Unfortunately I was in California during this meeting and missed what I hear was an outstanding program by Bill Isbister on the Internment of Japanese - Americans During WW II.  One member considered but did not have kids miss school to hear about this part of our history and expressed regret for not having them attend.

 

 

Meeting April 30

Notes from Hibbie

 

Hibbie announced that the District Conference will be held May 16-18 in Lake Geneva. Registration can be done through the Districe web site www.rotary6270.org.  The club will pay registration for those wishing to attend. We wished Larry and Holly Haskin well as they departed for Italy. Jennessa Magolan of the Clarion Hotel was welcomed as a guest.

 

Kathy Arciszewski( former County Supervisor) presented an excellent program on an addiction treatment and education program called New Way. A New Way focuses on treating addiction as a chronic disease that needs

early intervention and public support, particularly public funding. A key point was that untreated addiction places a burden on taxpayers because an untreated addicted person is likely to become a lawbreaker and the public expense of incarceration is up to seven times more expensive than treatment.

 

 We are looking forward to an exciting Senior Prom on May 4 at the Oak Creek Community Center. Several Club volunteers have signed on tohelp Rob Bassett make this another successful Rotary event.

 

Next week’s program is Internment of Japanese Americans during World War II and will be presented by Rotarian Bill Isbister.

 

 

 

Meeting April 23

Notes from Hibbie

 

Ken Tregellas presided at the meeting in Hibbie's absence. Ken, Hibbie and Rob Bassett attended the District Assembly on Saturday, April 19 and got as well as shared the latest Rotary information with District and Club leaders. Ken and Hibbie were prize winners at attendance drawing. The prizes were quickly recycled by Rob into Senior Prom door prizes.

 

We had great attendance at the second Family of the Year recognition. About 36 people were there inckluding 20 family members and guests.  We had guests from Fritsche Middle School (Robin Kitzrow) to support the Randy Young Family, Jane Gennerman from General Mitchell School to support the Tom Schmidt Family from Cudahy, and to support the Edward Berns Family from Oak Creek, we had Mary Beth Berns parents, Loran and Melanie Stave,  Michael and Luann Berns, and Cassidy Bowen.

 

Next week's program is " A New Way" ( Addiction Treatment and Education), by Kathy Arciszewski.

 

 

 

Meeting April 16

Notes from Hibbie

 

Announcements were made regarding the District Assembly on April 19 and the District Conference, May 16-18. Rob Bassett reported that plans for the Senior Prom were progressing.

 

In introducing the Family of the Year Program Hibbie recognized the outstanding service of Tom Spaltholz for his work on the Family of the Year. Tom introduced the Dean Anderson family and the Stuart Swanson family from south Milwaukee, as well as the family members and school leaders who came to this presentation. Tom also told of the many outstanding qualities and excellent contributions to their community by all the family members. The club honored the families with several gifts.

 

Next week's program will be recognition of Families of the Year from Bayview, Cudahy, and Oak Creek.

 

 

 

Meeting April 9

Notes from Hibbie

 

Hibbie again announced that the District Assembly will be on Saturday morning April 19 in Slinger. Hibbie, Ken T and Rob Bassett plan to attend. Let us know if you want to go and can car pool. Tom Spaltholz reported that the Family of the Year program recognition will be conducted at the next two meetings. Rob Bassett reported on the Senior Prom and passed around a sign-up sheet for the members to volunteer. Auction solicitation letters and donation forms are available and can be picked up at our meetings.

 

The Rotary Club of Mitchell Field's website (wiki) can now be accessed through the District 6270 website by clicking on Mitchell Field in the club locator. Now more people can know who we are and what we do.

Guests were Rotarian Tom Tesch (Milwaukee North Shore), Chris Voss(Past President), Wendie Rehorst, Diana Garnier and Jenessa Magolan, the new Sales Manager at the Clarion Hotel.

 

Rotarian Barb Felix of the Milwaukee Sunrise Club, assisted by Rotarian Jan Constable of the Elmbrook club gave us a very informative presentation about literacy. Barb explained the background and extent of literacy problems in the world and specifically in America. She heads an organization delivering literacy programs. Jan Constable shared his  experience in becoming a literacy volunteer and working to help non-readers. Meeting April 2

Notes from Hibbie

 

Rob Bassett reported that ticket sales for the Senior Prom were on schedule. He passed around a sign-up sheet for volunteer task support needed for the Prom from members.  The status of other programs remain on track. Donation Forms and Letters to Potential Donors to the October 24 Auction are available for pick-up. Now is the time to begin soliciting and collecting items.

 

Wendie Rehorst and Diana Garnier were our guests this week.

 

Bill Hattendorf ( a member of the Downtown Rotary Club) gave a power point presentation on the upcoming 2008 U S Bank Golf Championship, July 14-20 at Brown Deer. The key points were the significant amount of money raised for local charities, the great opportunity for businesses to host clients in a exciting atmosphere, the spectator friendliness of the Brown Deer course, and the many volunteer opportunities available that week. The April Board Meeting will be held at 11:00 am April 9.

Meeting March 26

Notes from Hibbie

 

 

Tom Spaltholz, Rob Bassett, Larry Haskin and Tom Schoenecker provided updates on our Family of the Year, Senior Prom, 50th Anniversary Celebration and Scholarship programs. Rob Bassett also gave a report on last weekend's Wisconsin Regional Robotics Competition at the US Cellular Arena. The Thomas More Team, which we support won the Wisconsin Regional Chairman's Award.

 

We were pleased to have as guests Rotarian Bill Isbister from Brookfield and Diana Garnier.

 

 Rob Bassett, who is also the District 6270 Water Coordinator, gave the program on "Thirsting to Serve Water," which featured a compelling DVD presentation on Rotary's commitment to help create more and better resources for clean water throughout the world. Not only is the need great, but there is also great opportunity for partnership and programs to address these needs. The goal is for every club in the District to develop or assist in a water project. The prime organization is the Water And Sanitation Rotarian Action Group (WASRAG).  The program for April 2 is the US Bank Championship Golf Tournament and will be presented by Bill Hattendorf.  

 

 

 

 

Meeting March 19

Notes from Hibbie

 

 

Tom Spaltholz reported that the Families of the Year had been selected and would be notified in the next few days. Families from Bay View, Cudahy, Oak Creek and South Milwaukee will be honored on April 16 and 26 meetings. No families were nominated from Franklin and St Francis this year. Tom has done a teriffic job in running this program.

 

Hibbie reported on the Random Act of Kindness that $80 had been given to the South Milwaukee Human Concerns Food Bank. John Clark was selected to carry out the next ROK.

 

The meeting this week was a Club Assembly. The main topics of discussion were the 50th Anniversary Celebration and increasing the club's membership:

 

50th Anniversary Celebration - Larry Haskin presented a preview of the dinner menu and some program ideas under consideration. We plan to invite past members and we're seeking memorabilia and photographs from past years to put on display at the event. Great thanks to Larry and his committee members Randy Groleau, Tom Schoenecker and Bob Garnier for their work.

 

Membership - We have brought in a few new members during the past year, but the consensus is that we need to do more. Although individual contact is the most common way to gain new members, we entertained a suggestion to hire a professional in either marketing or public relations to help find and contact potential members. This idea will be discussed at the next Board Meeting.

 

 We were pleased to have Wendie Rehorst attend again and participate in the discussion.

 

 The program for the upcoming meeting on Wednesday will be " Thirsting to Serve Water", by Rob Bassett.

 

 

 

Meeting March 12

Notes from Hibbie

 

We had a rather small turnout for one of the best weather days in a long time. The warm day made the walk from the surface parking lot easier since the parking structure was full..

 

Rob Bassett told us about the Thomas More Robotics Team's participation Friday and Saturday at a regional competition at the Cellular Arena. Tom Spaltholz reported that Family of the Year participation from local families was lagging this year.

 

We were pleased to have Diana Garnier as a guest.

 

Phil Rebensburg's program presentation was an update on Emergency Communications. He gave a handout on bandwidths and discussed how some agencies used their communications equipment. With each manufacturer creating their own radio types that can't communicate with each other, it is fortunate that specialized equipment is available to connect neighboring police, fire and rescue services during emergencies situations. The van Phil's group operates is equipped with this connecting equipment and is dispatched to emergency incidents when needed. It appears that there is no move to standardize or create compatibility in day-to-day emergency radios.

Meeting March 5

Notes from Hibbie

 

If there were a prize for person who brought the most guests to this meeting, Larry Haskin would have been the hands-down winner. In addition to his wife, Holly, his entourage included St. Thomas More High School President Bob Pauly, Alumni Board Member Jeff Korpal and St. Thomas More students Ramona Novak and Thomas Gates. Ramona, St. Thomas More valedictorian, and Thomas, the salutatorian talked about their activities, accomplishments and plans for the future. Thomas Gates had the additional distinction of a member of a Family of the Year at our club a few years ago.

 

It was good to see Wendie Rehorst visiting again.

 

The program featured Milwaukee Wave Indoor Soccer Team Chief Operating Officer Mike Lafferty and Public Relations Director Matt Schroeder. They presented a pictorial history of the team players and highlights from the team's 24 years of operation. A key part of their presentation is a project that has been presented to the City of Cudahy to use the defunct Iceport Arena site for Wal-Mart and a training facility for the Milwaukee Wave. According to Mike and Matt the new training facility has the potential to be a hub for develoing youth soccer in the area as well as benefit local business interests. There has been local opposition to Wal-Mart and as the lead business in the project, if Wal-Mart is rejected the Wave training facility cannot be developed.

 

Best wishes to President-Elect Ken Tregellas who is attending the Persident-Elect Training Seminar (PETS) in Appleton this weekend.

We had a surprise visit at our meeting on Wednesday from Wendy Rehorst, a past member. She was greeted warmly by old and new members alike. We hope she will return often.

 

Hibbie gave a dramatic reading from “Green Eggs and Ham” in honor of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.

 

Tom Spaltholz gave an update on our Family of the Year Program and Rob Bassett updated us on the Senior Prom upcoming on May 4. Hibbie reiterated the Club’s thanks to the Jones Family for the $1,500 in memorial donations from Emmett’s funeral.  Rob Bassett reported on his activities as District Water Coordinator and may have a proram on water for us soon.

 

Amy Kuba, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with the Veterans Administration gave us an interesting presentation on a work program for veterans. Getting jobs for veterans is a good thing, but an additional benefit of this particular program is that the companies that hire veterans also receive financial benefits beyond getting a good worker. At the Club Assembly, Rob Bassett presented check from Super Bowl Raffle ticket sales to representatives from Oak Creek High School Renaissance and the Professional Learning Institute (PLI). Three students from PLI spoke about their accomplishments.

 

Jeff and Janice Jones presented $1,500 in donations given to honor the memory of Emmett Jones. Gloria, Jeff, Janice and the entire Jones family are very gracious to support the work of our club in such a generous way. Thank you.

 

On Saturday, February 23 members of the Club attended the visitation/memorial for the passing of Frances King, Marty Kleven's mother. Our condolences go out to Marty, Chris and the entire extended family.

 

The program on February 27 will feature Amy Kuba from the Veterans Administration speaking on the Work Rehabilitation Program. 

 

 

Meeting February 13 -- Sweetheart Dinner

Those who attended the Sweetheart Dinner got just what was advertised -- good food, lots of fun and great entertainment. Vern Bethea was responsible for the gastronomic delights. The Atlantic salmon and filet mignon got "best ever" ratings from the attendees. The fun was provided by everyone there. (Rotarians and spouses do know how to have a good time!) James and Mary Criss were welcomed as guests and joined in the fun. Barbershop quarteters "Shear Delight" delivered the terrific entertainment. Their harmonious tunes evoked memories for many and toe-tapping for everyone. Lynn Heinrich impressed the crowd by correctly answering nearly every question about the classic songs. All in all, the event provided great fellowship -- and warmth on a cold evening. Thanks to John Clark and Rob Bassett who planned and coodinated this excellent annual event and the entertainment.

 

The February 20 meeting is a Club Assembly in which checks will be presented to community groups who earned money through the Super Bowl Raffle Program, and we will get an update on their activities.

Announcements included reports on the Sweetheart Dinner, the Family of the Year Program, and the Senior Prom. Twenty nine have signed up to attend the Sweetheart Dinner,  if you have signed up yet do so right away. Hibbie passed out some information on Black History Month Programs at America's Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee. Christins Rasmussen announced that she was taking a new job in suburban Chicago and would be leaving the club. We appreciate her service to the club and wish her well in her new job.

Rick Debe, District Chair for Polio Plus provided a inspiring proram on Polio Plus Partners a new twist to an ongoing program. There have been polio outbreaks in areas thought to be under control. World politics are making it difficult for people outside these countries to safely assist in immunizations. The new effort which is to equip local Rotary Clubs to carry out the immunizations is desperately in need of funds. Any funding received from Rotary Clubs will receice matching donations from Rotary International and the Gates Foundation.

Hibbie announced that the February Board Meeting will be held a week early on Feb 6 at 11:00 a m.

The program for Feb 6 will feature Mike Lafferty of the Milwaukee Wave.

Announcements included reports on the Sweetheart Dinner, the Family of the Year Program, and the Senior Prom, as well as kudos for Ken Tregellas and the Salvation Army for assisting area participants in the Guatemala Medical Relief Project with parking while in Guatemala.

Dr. Steve Patz, Superintendent of the Franklin School District gave a very interesting talk about Franklin Public Schools and how they approach education. He was very strong on respect for each other by administrators, teachers and students being a key element in effective learning.

Next week's speaker is Rick Debe, of District 6270 speaking on Polio Plus.

Our guests this week were Major Guy Thompson of the Salvation Army and Diana Ganier, wife of Bob Ganier.

John Clark announced that this year's Sweethear Dinner, on February 13, will include entertainment. The Shear Delight Barbershop Quartet will be featured, as will great food. Sign up at the next meeting or email John Clark at jbclark[at}milwpc.com. Entre choices are filet mignon or Atlantic salmon filet.

Tom Spaltholz said information for Family of the Year nominations would be mailed out in a few days.

Rob Basset reported that Senior Prom tickets would be sent to area senior centers.

Ken Tregillas reported that the Salvation Army had received a $3,000 donation from Host Marriot, the Airport food contractor.

Jim Briselden performed our Random Act of Kindness for December by giving the $100 collection to people at a food bank. Ken Tregellas was selected to perform the next Random Act of Kindness.

Gordy Bohmann pointed out that members donating to Every Rotarian Every Year should use the address from the Rotary International.org website. The mailing addresses on the brochure are outdated.

Our program was on the upcoming conversion to digital broadcast television featuring Jan Wade and Dean Maytag of Hearst Broadcasting (channel 12). This conversion we found out during this program will take place by February 2009 and affect all television sets receiving signals through the air by antenna. These sets will require a converter box to receive the new digital signals that are replacing the old analog signals that have been with us since the 1940s. Good news to most of us who have cable television. No converter boxes are needed and there will be literally no apparent effect to our reception except that it will probably be better and clearer.

Next week's speaker will be Dr. Steve Patz, Superintendent of the Franklin School District.

Meeting January 9

It is great to have friends, particularly in the financial service business. Our scheduled speaker on IRAs had to cancel his presentation and Al Henry came to our rescue. Al, an Honorary Member of the Club, who handles investments for UBS, volunteered on very short notice to give the program. The result was a very informative overview of the market and financial trends, as well as some insights on the economy and  investiments that might be suitable to the current financial climate.

 

Tom Spaltholz reported that the Family of the Year Program is getting underway. Volunteers are still needed to host the families when selected and assist them in preparing for and attending the recognition meeting.

 

John Clark is heading up the Sweetheart Dinner this year. This annual club event is being held at the Mitchell Field Airport Milwaukee Room (the regular club meeing room) at 6 p.m., Wednesday, February 13. The menu choices are filet mignon and Atlantic salmon. In addition to excellent food, there will also be entertainment by a well-known area barbershop quartet. A sign-up sheet will be at the next meeting, or you can sign up by email at jbclark@milwpc.com.

 

Rob Bassett reminded us that the Senior Prom will be held this year on Sunday, May 4, at the Oak Creek Community Center.  Tickets are being printed and will be on sale at senior centers and other locations  

 

Wednesday's week's program will be by Dean Maytag of Hearst Communications, who will talk about "The Conversion to Digital Broadcast Television".

Meeting January 2

We started the New year with a Club Assembly. Among the items discussed was orientation of new members. The concensus was that formal orientation sessions were not needed given the relatvely small membership and the pattern of involving new members in club activities early and frequently. Another item discussed was plans and records for club acitivities. All of the club activities are well planned and organized. However, the plans and records for these events are mostly in the possession/heads of the current activity leaders, which provides no access to reference material unless the individuals are consulted and provide needed information or guidance. Based on this discussion, the action plan is to have each of the event leasers pull together documentation and schedules over the next several weeks so as to create an archive for each event. These records can be used for training and for reference in case there is a need for someone else to assume leadership of  the event or project. Hibbie will be contacting the leaders of the major functions and working with them as necessary to help develop this archive. The plan is for the archives to be in a computer file to the degree possible and to be held by the club secretary in a CD format for ready reference and update.

Rob Bassett announced that the club will receive something over $1,700 in revenue based on participation the Super Bowl Raffle. Rob got a hearty round of applause for his work on the raffle on behalf of the club. Hibbie announced a donation of $150 from the Garlic Mustard Pickers band as part of their community-service work. The Garlic Mustard Pickers not only provide good music, but see themselves as community servants and in 2007 donated approximately $2,400 of their proceeds to community groups or agencies. The band has an open rehearsal on January 7 at the Fixx Coffee House in St. Francis and everyone is invited to attend.

Tom Spaltholz announced that he will be initiating 2008 Family of the Year activities within the next week or so and gave a general overview of the program. He asked for volunteers to be hosts for each of the six communities we serve from which families will come to work with the selected families and personalize their contact with our Rotary Club. Anyone available to volunteer should contact Tom.

Members, mark your calendars for Feb. 13 for our annual Sweetheart Dinner. John Clark and Rob Bassett are heading up this event which will be held at 6 p.m. at the Mitchell Field Airport. This dinner will take the place of the regular noon meeting that day. This event is an opportunity for Rotary fellowship within the club and to introduce a friend or prospective member to the social side of Rotary with a good meal in a friendly environment. More information about the program and menu will be forthcoming.

PDG Mike Slawny gave a comprehensive presentation on the Rotary Foundation and how monetary contributions of individual members to "Every Rotarian Every Year" can magnify the financial support for many Club, District and International projects through  funds from the Foundation.

 

We were saddened by the passing of long time member Emmmett Jones on December 15.  Emmett was active in the our Club for most of its 49 year plus existance. There are no words sufficient to describe the value of his membership to our Club or the personal impact of the loss of such a fine man and good friend

We had a very interesting presentation by Michael Sloan on a Rotary program to provide health and education to the children of Kilifi, Kenya. He explained how support for and by the Rotary Foundation made programs like his possible.

Thanks to Donna Stresing and Tom Spaltholz for their leadership for the Goodwill Christmas Party December 5 and the Salvation Army Bell Ringing December 8, respectively. Tom and Donna reported that the activities were very successful. The support and participation of all members and friends in these projects are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance to Donna Stresing and her supporting cast for getting things ready for the gala Chhristmas Party together. Our visitors from Goodwill are bound to have a great time with Santa, elves, a reindeer, and the Salvation Army Band.

 

The November 28 program was "I.D. theft and other Wisconsin scams," by Elizabeth Howard, State Consumer  Protection Bureau.  She gave us a number of things to watch out for and left a bunch of brochures on items she did'n't have time to talk about. The big reminder is that banks don't ask for account infomation or updates over the phone or on the internet. Any such request is bogus and could cause you to lose a lot of money if you respond.

Last week's program was"Getting Elected to the South Milwaukee School Board," by Kristen Drenzek, South Milwaukee School Board member. She gave us insight into the comlpexity of this degree of community involvement.

 

Christina Rasmussen gave her report on the Random Act of Kindness and Jim Briselden was selected for the next ROK.

Meeting November 21

This week's program is"Getting Elected to the South Milwaukee School Board," by Kristen Drenzek, South Milwaukee School Board member.  The election process for 2008-09 Club officials will get underway this week, concluding on December 19. We hope everyone is ready for a Happy and Safe Thanksgiving Holiday.

 

At the November 14 Board Meeting the Board approved a $500 donation the Guatemala Medical Project of the Thiensville- Mequon Rotary Club and a $500 donation to the Silverliners North Pole Flight Christmas Program for kids. Also approved was a six month leave of absence for Emmett Jones. We are wishing Emmett well in his recouperation and are looking forward to his return.

 

At the November 14 meeting Randy Groleau, Christina Rasmussen and Steve Sutherland become members of our club, receiving ther Rotary Pins, badges and membership certificates at the induction ceremony. We enjoyed their classifcation tallks.  Randy and Christina were fairly brief, but Steve ran out of time for all his adventures, which I'm sure we will hear about at a future time....

Meeting November 14

The program for November 14 is a Club Assembly during which we will have an update on the Thanksgiving Basket Program, talk about the annual Goodwill Christmas Party on December 5, and continue sign-ups for the Salvation Army Bell Ringing on December 8. We also have a brief review of the activity at the monthly Board of Directors meeting held at 11:00 a. m. preceding the regular meeting. The feature of the meeting will be the induction ceremony for Randy Groleau, Christina Rasmussen and Steve Sutherland as they become members of our club.

The program for November 7 was "Take from All Sources, Open All Doors" by Dave Hendrickson of Toastmasters.

His talk was an entertaining mix of personal experiences and provocative ideas about how we deal with  perceptions.  He believes that approaching activities and occurances in our lives with an open, receptive mind can be very beneficial and as he says "open doors".

The attendance has been improving. I appreciate the effort of those members who are attending and look forward to seeing soon those who have been away.

At the October 31 meeting:

District Governor Ted Gurzynski shared his insight and experiences gained in his more than 25 years in Rotary. He related that personally giving polio immunizations to children in Niger was his most satisfying Rotary experience.

Randy Groleau, Christina Rasmussen and Steve Sutherland were announced as proposed new members.

Tom Spaltholz passed out sign-up sheets for Thanksgiving Basket Assembly and Family Breakfast at 8:00 a. m. on November 17 and Salvation Army Bell Ringing on December 8.  Sign-up at the November 7 meeting if you missed them.

Meeting October 31

We are pleased to welcome as our speaker, District Governor Ted Gurzynski, leader of Rotary District 6270 which represents 58 clubs in eastern Wisconsin. DGTed is no stranger to RCMF, serving as Club president 1995-96, among the many leadership positions he has held during his 25 years of Rotary service.  Also at this meeting we will receive a report on the Club's latest Random Act of Kindness from Tom Spaltholz and select the member to perform our next Random Act of Kindness.

The program for our meeting of October 24 had a last-minute change. Our scheduled speaker, Tim Mahone of the Governor's Office, was prepared to give us an update on the State Budget. He was, however, called to Madison to deal with impending approval of the budget after a long impasse. With Rotarians typical resourcefulness, an alternative program, a videotape, "Paul Harris and the Boys of 1905," was substituted. The video provided insight into Rotary in Chicago and Rotarians who served with Paul Harris in the early years of Rotary development.

We welcomed returning guests, Diana Garnier, Randy Groleau, Christina Rasmussen and Steve Sutherland, and two first-time guests, Father Steve of Divine Mercy Parish and an 82-year-old Rotarian from southern India, who graciously shared aspects of her life and Rotary experiences with us.

Meeting October 24

Notes from Hibbie,

After hearing Rodger Nelson talk about Rotary in general and the Mitchell Field Club in particular on October 17, I believe we all are able to feel renewed pride in the capacity for and delivery of service by our club over the past years and in the future. There is great strength in working together and supporting each other in Rotary service. Bob Garnier videotaped Rodger's talk so we will be able to revisit Rodger's wise and inspirational words from time to time.

Great financial news from the auction. The net proceeds are in the neighborhood of $17,800. This includes all of the auction activity and serveral generous cash gifts. Many thanks to Rob Bassett and Marty Kleven whose leadership was the key to our success. Kudos also to everyone who contributed items, time, money and attendance.

Rob Bassett and Hibbie Hayslett attended the District Seminar on October 13 and learned about a lot of ideas to promote effective clubs, some of which might be useful to our club.

The Thanksgiving Basket Program is underway, headed by Z Masunungure. Tom Spaltholz is putting together a Family Breakfast in conjunction with the assembly and delivery of Thanksgiving Baskets at 8 am on November 17 at the Clarion Hotel. Members and their families are encouraged to come and help assmble the baskets and enjoy breakfast together that morning followed by basket deliveries.

Tom Spaltholz announced that Christmas Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army will be on Saturday, December 8, at the TriCity Pick 'N' Save on South 27th Street across from Home Depot. Bell ringers can sign up at the next meeting.

The program for October 24 is Tim Mahone, Southeast Wisconsin Director for the Office of the Governor, giving us an update of the state budget.

Preliminary accounting from the Auction Dinner points to another successful Club fundraiser.  A more complete report will be available by the meeting Wednesday.  Special thanks to Marty Kleven and Rob Bassett, our Auction Co-Chairs, for their leadership, planning and hard work in making it a success. Those of us who attended had a great time.

Several people worked before during and after the Dinner to make sure everything went smoothly including: Rob, Marty, Al Henry, Dean Weinberger, Jim Briselden, Tom Schoenecker, Donna Stresing, Rodger Nelson, Ken Tyborski, and Jim Heinrich, as well as Jim Gumprecht who took in reservations.  All who helped with the Auction in any way can take pride in it's success and know their contributions were appreciated.

 

The Clarion Hotel did a great job in setting up for the Auction and providing an excellent dinner with smooth, friendly service.

Meeting October 10

Notes from Hibbie,

 

 

We had a great program last we presented by Doug Hansen of the Thiensville-Mequon Rotary Club on their annual Medical Mission to Guatemala. Approximately 800 rural poor receive medical and dental through the work of volunteers and donated money for medical supplies brought to Guatemala by their club. Several clubs in the District financially support this project and they would like our support too. It is something we should consider seriously.

 

This week's program is a Club Assembly focusing on final preparation for the Auction Dinner on Friday. We will also determine a date and location for our 50th Anniversary Celebration.

The monthly Board Meeting will be at 11:00 am preceding the regular meeting.

District Seminar is Saturday, October 13, at 8:00 am in Slinger

If you haven't signed up to attend the Auction please do so by Wednesday , October 3.  There will be a sign up sheet at the meeting or online at GUMPJW@aol.com . We would hate to see anyone, particularly fellow Rotarians, miss out on a fun evening . Those whose business pressures make attending Wednesday noon meeting problematic will find the Auction Dinner a fun Rotary makeup and not in conflict with daily business.

 

Booze and restaurant gift certificates are still needed to fill out the raffles. Bring them Wednesday. You can steer people to our informational Auction flyer which is accessible through the home page.

 

Emmett Jones is home from the hospital and our well wishes continue to be sent his way.

 

Anyone having extra Badger items or memorabilia please get them to us for use to "Badger up" Dick Hay's room. He's a huge fan and would appreciate it.

 

Our speaker last week , Kathy Stresman, Spoke to us about Stop It Now! Wisconsin, a new program to help prevent child abuse. Through this program confidential resources are available to assist those who encounter or suspect child abuse. This is a very dificult issue for anyone and to have a contact for help and guidance may get life changing help for a defenseless child. She is asking Rotary Clubs to help spread the word about these services.  Brochures are available at the sign in table at meetings.
